Eisbrecher
Interview with Alexx Wesselsky, May 2007

“Antikoerper” is the second album of the Munich based band “Eisbrecher”. The music is harder than on their debut release, but fans love it. On a - so far - successful tour the band rocks all over Germany and Austria. Radio Goethe Reporter Nina Pauler met up in Nuremberg with two metres of energy: she talked to leadsinger Alexx in their beautiful tourbus:

Radio Goethe: How is the tour so far?
Alexx Wesselsky: The tour up to now is fantastic! We just did three shows, that was Ludwigsburg, that’s close to Stuttgart – for all the people who are familiar with European maps – we played Vienna, that’s Austria, which makes our tour even international. And we played Munich, our base, our hometown and every single city has been rocked. Mission accomplished, we are still on tour and the people seem to like us. It’s a great success story! I am glad!
Radio Goethe: You´re on tour with your new album “Antikoerper”. What´s your favourite song on this record?
Alexx Wesselsky: It’s always hard to tell what your own favourite song is, because as time goes by, one day it’s this one, another day that one, and there are songs you just like very much. But after listening to it 55 000 times in the studio, you start to hate it. But on tour the big surprise song, we played for the first time, was “Vergißmeinnicht” – so it’s my total live-favourite. And “Leider” is my favourite on the record. It’s the perfect song with the perfect lyrics.
Radio Goethe: What inspires you? I don’t mean bands or music – I mean books or people or a film…
Alexx Wesselsky: Well it’s quite simple: Life inspires me. It can be a book, a song, a movie in the cinema – but most inspiration I take from watching people live. I take my own life, I take others life… The most interesting story is life. .
Radio Goethe: And from your life is this song, where you sing, that you need to hurt yourself again and again?
Alexx Wesselsky: You don’t have to be a mass murderer to make a film about a mass murderer. And you don’t have to be a borderline personality to talk about this subject. You mean the song “Leider” – so this song is about people, who cut themselves to feel that they´re still alive. Whatever their motivation is. I don’t know. I´m not borderline, but I met quite some people, and in this case I got curious and I wanted to do something with that topic, because I think it´s interesting to talk about it. It caught me and I wanted to make a song.
Radio Goethe: And it fits perfect with the brutality of the music….
Alexx Wesselsky: Ja, that’s important. I am quite happy with it, as I said, I like “Leider” the most. Because this song is really heavy and it’s really mean and the lyrics are quite mean. And it´s still a little ironic, well the song itself is quite a borderliner, because it’s not a funny topic, but it´s just as we interpreted it. And I talked to borderline persons, how they like the song and they told me, that I got quite to the point. And that makes me proud.
Radio Goethe: Different topic now: You are going to play in Moscow…Is this your first time over there?
Alexx Wesselsky: Well …yeah…we are going to Moscow and we don’t do it with guns and tanks and rifles – we do it with music. I remember there was Napoleon once and there was another German dude, who was actually from Austria – he tried to get to Moscow but didn´t make it there – thank god! And we are really happy to play Moscow and it’s just the music, that makes it possible. Thank you for that, God!
Radio Goethe: And the fans are expecting you there?
Alexx Wesselsky: I don’t expect anything. What I hope is that we don’t play in a club where nobody appears. I talked to Subway to Sally and to Tanzwut, they all played the same club already and they said: you´ll be surprised when you get there. There will be a great audience and they will go totally crazy …and we're now looking forward to that…and Eisbrecher is getting more and more international. I am very proud of that. And next time we'll go to the US, I hope!
Radio Goethe: So, would you like to play in Times Square?
Alexx Wesselsky: Well a small club somewhere in the USA or Canada will be fine too, because you have to start somewhere. But Times Square is also ok for us. …But there´s a little more work for us to do until we will be invited to play there. But we are ready…and if you know anybody who can make it possible we will come!
Radio Goethe: How important are lyrics? You´re singing in German. Do you think, that people in the USA or in Russia will learn German to understand your lyrics?
Alexx Wesselsky: I definitely do know quite some people in the US, who started learning German after they read our lyrics, after they found out: well I like the music, but I don’t understand the words. So here we go take German classes and suddenly get into German culture, German way of thinking, German language. I think: what a great compliment! Music is tearing down borders, people get interested, get more open minded. The success of Rammstein did quite some work and we´re kind of follow up….so I know a lot of people, who take German classes to understand what we are talking about.
Radio Goethe: What are the next projects for Eisbrecher after the tour?
Alexx Wesselsky: ...its always the same after the tour: sleep one week, then I´ll go and see my therapist to talk about all the experiences. We start working on album number three and hopefully release it by February or March 2008. So there´s a lot of work to do, some more festivals and maybe in the winter we're going to do some more shows like Christmas metal battle.
